The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) via its notification has clarified that spending CSR funds to set up “makeshift hospitals and temporary COVID care facilities” will be treated as an eligible CSR activity, providing a significant boost to corporate India looking to undertake CSR around the Covid-19 pandemic.
This would be permissible as a CSR activity under Schedule VII of the Companies Act, which deals with the promotion of healthcare, including preventive healthcare and disaster management. Companies must consult with state governments before engaging in these activities for COVID care facilities.
