The closest which comes to mind is the 1918 flu pandemic. In the United States, the government while declaring the flu as an epidemic closed schools, churches, theatres, etc. and ban public gatherings and isolated sick persons.
And, the response to the 1918 pandemic offers some valuable lessons. The imposition of aggressive social distancing and the various curbs as highlighted above helped curtained the situation from aggravating. However, the withdrawal of restrictions has to be done in a planned way so that the death rate may not escalate further.
